By the Jagielloński Square vis a vis the Sun Gallery in Radom two demontrative „green bus stops” have been installed as a part of innovative solutions of blue and green infrastructure realized in the range of LIFE project in Radom.

It constitutes the method of diminishing hard surface in the urban area and water drainage in place of precipitation. Although green roofs can be considered an extravagance, they become more and more common in Polish cities. They play an important role in the collection of rainwater, gradually draining it to the water supply or evaporating into the atmosphere, thanks to that lowering the temperature of the surroundings. Temperature in cities is always a little higher than in surrounding areas. The professional term for this phenomenon is „the urban heat island”, which as a result of a disruption of the hydrological cycle leads to formation of storm clouds. In cases of violent weather events, green roofs support municipal sewer systems, absorbing even up to 80% of the annual rainfall on its surface. With the retention of rainwater the green roofs delay rainwater running off to the drainage system, so that it is not overloaded during sudden downpours. Green roof is also an ideal resting place for birds and insects during hot weather. The properly selected plants growing on a green roof reduce the outflow of rainwater and thus, lower the temperature inside the room in summer.

Green roofs have also educational purposes by rising the city residents awarness of an importance of processes in nature and their impact on our health and well-being.

We hope that the demonstration green sheds installed in the Centre of Radom will increase interest in this type of solutions in the belief that it brings great benefits to our citizens.
